Vaginal Infections: Incidence, Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Vaginal infections are among the most common reasons women seek gynaecological care. While often easily treatable, ignoring symptoms or self-medicating without proper diagnosis can lead to recurrence, discomfort, and complications. 3 out of 4 women suffer from vaginal infection with 75% of women suffering from vaginal infection once in lifetime.

Symptoms of vaginal infections: Vary depending on the type of infection, but some warning signs should never be ignored.

Vaginal discharge

• Change in colour (white, yellow, green, grey)

• Altered consistency (thick, curdy, frothy, watery)

• Foul or fishy smell

Local discomfort

• Vaginal itching or irritation around the vagina and vulva

• Burning sensation, especially while passing urine

• Redness or swelling of the vulva

Other symptoms

• Pain or discomfort during intercourse

• Lower abdominal discomfort (in some infections)

• Sometimes no symptoms at all, especially in bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis.

Causes of Vaginal Infections in Women

The vagina maintains a delicate balance of healthy bacteria, mainly lactobacilli, which protect against infections. Any disturbance in this balance can lead to infection.

Common causes include :

1. Altered vaginal flora

2. Fungal overgrowth (yeast infections): antibioitic abuse, over the counter medications

3. Sexual practices: multiple partners, unprotected intercourse

4. Hygiene practices (bacterial vaginosis): using scented soaps, douching, synthetic undergarments

5. Hormonal changes: menopause

6. Medical conditions and lifestyle factors: diabetes, HIV, poor immunity

Why Early Diagnosis and Treatment Matters

Many women delay seeking help due to embarrassment or the belief that symptoms will resolve on their own. However, untreated vaginal infections can:

• Recur frequently

• Increase the risk of pelvic infections and infertiltiy

• Cause complications in pregnancy

• Increase susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections

Proper diagnosis is essential because each type of infection requires different treatment. Selfmedication may temporarily relieve symptoms but often worsens recurrence.

When to See a Gynaecologist for Vaginal Infections:

Seek medical advice if you have:

• Recurrent vaginal infections

• Persistent itching, burning, or irritation

• Foul-smelling or unusual vaginal discharge

• Symptoms during pregnancy

• No improvement with previous treatment

TakeHome Message

Vaginal infections are common, treatable, and nothing to feel ashamed about. Being aware of normal versus abnormal symptoms, avoiding harmful hygiene practices, and seeking timely medical advice can go a long way in maintaining vaginal health.

If you experience persistent itching, unusual discharge, bad odour, or discomfort, consult a gynaecologist rather than selftreating. Early care ensures faster relief and prevents longterm issues.

Healthy vagina, healthy life.
